I was born in Seattle, but spent parts of my childhood in California and New Hampshire. I got started writing for Seattle Weekly, then moved to New York, where I wrote about books, film, feminism, and women's sports (including fast-pitch softball and the National Cheerleading Championships) and briefly covered the Yankees for the Village Voice. I have written for Newsday about books, Interview about movies, and Mademoiselle about boyfriends and how to clean your room. My original articles about feminist science fiction and James Tiptree Jr. appeared in Ms. and the Voice Literary Supplement. I live in Amsterdam with my husband, an award-winning Dutch and Frisian translator, and our two children.
I didn't know much about science fiction when I started writing James Tiptree, Jr., but I was interested in women's lives, and Alice Sheldon turned out to have a fascinating one.
